Sprinklers, MP Rotators, and getting more lawn per litre

Every reticulation system is built from a handful of sprinkler types, and picking the right one for each zone is what separates an even, healthy lawn from dry patches and a high water bill. Here's how the common options compare, and why we default to Hunter MP Rotators wherever they're a good fit.

Pop-up Spray Heads

The standard fixed spray nozzle most Perth gardens already have. Pops up, sprays a fan-shaped pattern, retracts when off. Simple and cheap to install, but applies water fast — often faster than sandy soil can absorb it — which wastes water to runoff on slopes, paths and driveways.

Best for: small garden beds & narrow strips

Gear-Driven Rotors

A single rotating stream that slowly sweeps across a large area. Lower application rate than a spray head and better suited to bigger open lawns, but each head only waters one point at a time, so uniformity over smaller or oddly shaped areas can suffer.

Best for: large open lawns & ovals

MP Rotator Nozzles (Hunter Industries)

Multiple rotating streams from a single nozzle that screws straight onto a standard spray body. Combines the low, soil-friendly application rate of a rotor with the flexibility and easy retrofit of a spray head — our default choice for most suburban Perth lawns.

Best for: most standard-size lawns & retrofits

Drip & Micro-Spray

Low-flow tubing or micro-jets that deliver water directly to the root zone of a plant rather than through the air. Minimal evaporation loss, ideal for garden beds and native planting where we're already designing for water efficiency.

Best for: garden beds, natives & screening plants

🔴 Standard Spray Nozzle

  • Applies water at roughly 1.6 in/hr — far faster than most soils, especially Perth's sandy profile, can absorb
  • Higher rate leads to runoff onto paving and driveways, particularly on slopes
  • Fine mist pattern drifts easily in wind, watering paths instead of lawn
  • Fixed range per nozzle size — more nozzle types needed to cover varied zone shapes

🟢 Hunter MP Rotator

  • Multi-stream design applies water at just 0.4 in/hr (0.8 in/hr on the MP800), letting it soak in rather than run off
  • Rated to use around 30% less water than a traditional spray nozzle for the same coverage
  • Heavier droplet streams resist wind drift far better than a fine spray mist
  • One nozzle range covers everything from a 1.5m strip to an 11m radius, simplifying zone design
  • Screws onto existing spray bodies — an easy retrofit without re-trenching the system

Because MP Rotators run at a lower flow rate, more heads can often share the one valve — meaning fewer valves, less pipe and less wiring on a new install, and a genuinely easy upgrade path on an existing system since the nozzle simply replaces what's already screwed into the spray body.
